March 20, 2009

200 high school students from across the city convened at John Jay College of Criminal Justice today to participate in a series of workshops, organized around law-related careers and issues, as part of the 2009 Youth Law Conference.

Students from the following law cluster high schools attended:

High School for Service and Learning
Hillcrest High School

William Cullen Bryant High School

The cosponsors of the event were the Justice Resource Center, the Justice Center of the New York County Lawyers Association, and John Jay College.

Highlights from the day-long conference included:

  • a plenary panel of distinguished law-related professionals, including a former New York Court of Appeals judge and practicing corporate attorneys;
  • career-related workshops a number of areas, including the following: family law, entertainment law, free legal services, criminal prosecution and defense;
  • a tour of the John Jay campus for each group of high school students in attendance.

Thanks to the teachers and students in attendance who made the conference such a success! Thanks also to the panelists and workshop facilitators for offering our students advice and expertise regarding law-related careers! Below are some students' reactions to their experience.

"I had a great time. We need this experience to have a better understanding of the law. I'm glad that I came."

"I enjoyed attending...I'm also considering this college...Thank you for the opportunity!"

"I enjoyed the entertainment law speaker. The stories he told to us were a big WOW!"

"In the criminal prosecution workshop I learned things that I had never heard before. It really helped me to see what I'm thinking of doing later in life."

"This motivated me to do better in my classes so I can have a brighter future."

"Good food!"

An Invitation

Some of the programs descibed here are now in their third decade. Founded in New York City, the programs have been replicated in many states and other countries. Tens of thousands of students and lawyers have participated. Many of those students are now practicing law. Many others serve as as court and law enforcement officers. We invite you to review these pages, contact us with questions, and join in our work.
