Congratulations to Brooklyn Technical High School, 2008 MENTOR Moot Court Champions

December 10, 2008

After surviving an incredibly competitive gauntlet of preliminary, quarterfinal, and semifinal rounds, all that stood between Brooklyn Technical High School and the 2008 MENTOR Moot Court championship trophy was a final round matchup with Stuyvesant High School, the two-time reigning champion.

At the end of the evening, however, even Stuyvesant's impressive performance was not enough to prevent Brooklyn Tech from earning its place in Moot Court history as the 2008 MENTOR Moot Court Champion!

The three federal judges who presided over the final round, Hon. Naomi Buchwald, Hon. George Daniels, and Hon. Richard Holwell, all praised the finalists for their preparation, poise, and presentation.

The Ceremonial Courtroom in the Federal Courthouse at 500 Pearl Street provided an elegant backdrop to the final round.
Moot Court teams from other high schools, including Herbert H. Lehman, Harry S. Truman, High School for Service and Learning at Erasmus, and Eleanor Roosevelt also attended, and were recognized with certificates for their participation in the competition.

After the awards presentation, over cookies and coffee in the courtroom vestibule, it was clear that this year's MENTOR Moot Court was a valuable experience for the hundreds of students, teachers, and MENTOR attorney-coaches that make it possible.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING CORRECTION
To: All MENTOR Moot Court Teams

From: Valeria Castanaro (Mentor Moot Court Editor)

In the problem, for Issue I (the First Amendment), the case Bd. Of Education v. Pico (457 U.S. 853 (1982)) is cited for the broad proposition that students in public schools should be encouraged to discuss important issues with one another.  It has been brought to my attention that the Dissent for this case uses a multitude of inappropriate language.  PLEASE do not give your students the Dissent to this case in preparing for the competition, the case was only cited for an example of a proposition stated in Tinker, and has no relevance beyond that fact.

Please note this correction memo!!
