Project Citizen: A Project-based Public Policy Program
Designed to engage students across a variety of grade levels in the research and design of a public policy in their community, Project Citizen is a powerful tool for promoting civic engagement!
As they complete their portfolios, individual students and/or groups of students create a four-part display board and a literacy-based binder to document their research. Below: a Project Citizen display board, courtesy of P.S. 8, Robert Fulton.
First, students identify a public policy issue that is important to their community . . .

Then, the students research alternative policies in other communities . . .

Next, the students create and propose their own unique public policy . . .

Finally, the students devise an action plan to see their proposal to its implementation!

Throughout the project, students maintain a portfolio binder, which contains their research, surveys, proposals, charts, and reflections.
